Dear Friends in Christ,
On Sunday, June 21, we will formally say good-bye to Jean Callary. Jean and Ed will be moving to Austin to be near grandchildren. On that day in worship we will offer this prayer, even as we have done with a number of others over the last couple of years:
Day by day, guide them and give them what is needed, friends to cheer their way, and a clear vision of that to which you are now calling them. By your Holy Spirit be present in their pilgrimage, that they may travel with the one who is the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
These words come from our service of Farewell and Godspeed. They remind me when the time comes to say good-bye that God holds close the one who is leaving us. I, for one, am thinking these words would be good to memorize and to pray whenever I send a loved one on their way. Indeed, during the upcoming summer months when our routines are mixed up and travel may be on the agenda more than usual, we would do well to offer these words of blessing over and over to one another. For it is so that in a very real way, all of life is a pilgrimage. Our life journey and all the small side-trips our journeys contain find their beginning and their end in Jesus. What a gift to remember that Jesus is alongside us all the way.
So as you come and go in the months to come, know that my prayer for you is God’s guidance. That you will have all that you need. That friends to cheer your way will be present. And that always you will have the sense that God is calling you to something meaningful.
May these weeks be ones of renewal. And when your travels bring you home, be sure to join us for worship on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. I will love to hear where your pilgrimage is taking you!
